This Week: Planning for Citi Bike in Harlem

This week community boards will take up street safety in Red Hook, improvements to Brooklyn’s Empire Boulevard, and Citi Bike’s expansion into Harlem. TA will scope east-west bike routes on the Upper East Side, and Amtrak will reveal its Sunnyside Yard master plan.

  • Tuesday: On the agenda for the Manhattan CB 10 transportation committee: Citi Bike planning, DOT benches, and bus shelters. 6:30 p.m.
  • Tuesday: DOT will present plans for improvements to Empire Boulevard to the Brooklyn CB 17 transportation committee. 7:30 p.m.
  • Thursday: The New York chapter of the Transportation Research Forum will host a discussion of Amtrak’s master plan for Sunnyside Yard, which serves Penn Station and is vital to the operations of Amtrak and NJ Transit. 11:45 a.m. Reservations required.
  • Thursday: Assembly Member Robert Rodriguez and CIVITAS will hold a panel on the Second Avenue subway, featuring Assembly Member Jim Brennan; Columbia professor David King; and Nick Sifuentes, deputy director of Riders Alliance. 6 p.m.
  • Thursday: At a meeting of the Brooklyn CB 6 transportation committee, DOT and DDC will present preliminary designs for approaches to Red Hook’s Valentino Pier, aimed at improving the public realm, enhancing pedestrian and bicyclist safety, and capturing stormwater runoff. And Captain Elliot Colon, the new commanding officer of the 76th Precinct, will introduce himself and discuss public safety concerns. 6:30 p.m.
  • Saturday: The Upper East Side lacks safe corridors for east-west riding. Transportation Alternatives and Bike New York are hosting a “street scan” to identify which neighborhood streets would work best for protected east-west bike lanes. Recommendations will be submitted to DOT and “local decision makers.” 11 a.m.
