This Week: Bronx Candidate Forum, Safer Amsterdam Avenue

The 15th City Council district has seen some notable livable streets changes in the past 6 years, including the addition of two Select Bus Service routes. Will the momentum continue? The candidates to replace term-limited Council Member Joel Rivera square off tonight at a forum about neighborhood health and environmental sustainability.

Also this week: Speak up for a safer Amsterdam Avenue — the most dangerous northbound street on the Upper West Side — at a Community Board 7 transportation committee meeting on Wednesday.

  • Monday: Hear candidates for the 15th City Council district discuss how they’ll address environmental health and sustainability issues. • Tuesday: Help generate ideas for better walking and biking access to the Jamaica Bay Greenway at this community workshop. 6:00 p.m.
  • Wednesday: The transportation committee of Manhattan Community Board 7 will be discussing potential redesigns of major north-south avenues on the Upper West Side. Come and make the case for upgrading streets like Amsterdam Avenue so they work better for walking, biking, and transit. 6:45 p.m.
  • Also Wednesday: Learn about how global cities have made progress on broad-based, participatory efforts to become more environmentally sustainable and resilient. This is the second installment of a two-part series – ”Equity, Engagement and Transparency in Urban Adaptation” – that began last week. 6:00 p.m.
  • Friday and Saturday: Car-free street events are happening in Williamsburg, the South Slope, Sunnyside, and Bed Stuy this weekend. Times vary.
