Speak Up for a Safer, More Accessible East Side Tonight

Tonight’s CB 6 transportation committee meeting is an especially important one, with East Side bike-share, cross-town bike lanes and 34th Street Select Bus Service all on the agenda. It’s an opportunity to show support for a variety of livable streets initiatives at once. As always, the more voices supporting safer streets and effective transit, the better.

The Manhattan community board action continues later in the week as committees address safety and street improvement issues in Harlem, Chinatown and the East Side. Also: You’re invited to join us Wednesday at Red Lantern in Fort Greene for happy hour with the Streetsblog and Streetfilms crew.

  • Today: The Manhattan Community Board 6 Public Safety, Environment & Transportation Committee will discuss several proposals for the East Side: bike-share station sitings; the DOT plan for cross-town bike lanes along E. 29th and 30th Streets; and E. 34th Street Select Bus Service. 6:30 p.m.
  • Wednesday: Join the Streetsblog and Streetfilms team for an evening of fun and films at the Red Lantern cafe and bike shop in Brooklyn. Celebrate the growing livable streets movement and meet the stars of the My NYC Biking Story Streetfilms. 8 to 10 p.m.
  • Wednesday: The Manhattan CB 3 transportation committee will take up the Chinatown curbside study; the co-naming of Delancey Street for slain pedestrian Dashane Santana; and a training program for delivery cyclists. 6:30 p.m.
  • Wednesday: DOT present proposed safety improvements for Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard to the Manhattan CB 10 transportation committee. 6:30 p.m.
  • Thursday: Manhattan CB 2 and NYU’s Office of Government and Community Affairs host a panel discussion on East River bridge tolls, congestion pricing and related issues, with panelists Paul Steely White (Transportation Alternatives), Kate Slevin (Tri-State Transportation Campaign), Hope Cohen (Regional Plan Association) and transportation analyst Charles Komanoff. Q&A follows. 6 p.m.
  • Thursday: MTA New York City Transit shares the results of its study on Staten Island North Shore transit. 6:30 p.m.
  • Saturday: Now in its fifth year, National Train Day is back to celebrate train travel and the ways trains touch the lives of people with events across America. Saturday’s event at Grand Central Terminal will feature live entertainment, interactive and educational exhibits, kids’ activities, model train displays and tours of Amtrak equipment, freight and commuter trains, and notable private railroad cars. 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
