This week brings big news for cyclists and pedestrians on Manhattan’s west side. On Wednesday, DOT will present plans to extend the Eighth and Ninth Avenue bike lanes north all the way to 59th Street. Right now, the Ninth Avenue protected lane begins at 30th Street while the Eighth Avenue lane switches from a protected lane to a painted lane at 34th Street. If upgraded to protected lanes, the redesign will bring safer walking and cycling past the Lincoln Tunnel and the Port Authority, through Midtown and the theater district, straight up to Columbus Circle.

Tuesday: Elected officials host the final public forum for East Siders to weigh in on plans to close the Midtown gap in the East River greenway. 5:00 p.m.

Also Tuesday: Streetsblog publisher Mark Gorton speaks at NYU’s Rudin Center on the harms caused by designing cities for the automobile, and how to redesign them for livable streets. 8:30 a.m.

Wednesday: DOT presents plans to extend the Eighth and Ninth Avenue bike lanes north to 59th Street to CB 4’s transportation committee. 6:30 p.m.

Friday: UMass Professor John Collura offers a morning seminar on transportation finance, evaluating a number of options for funding infrastructure as gas tax revenues continue to fall short. 9:30 a.m.

Saturday: Marches and group bike rides from across the city, led by climate expert Dr. James Hansen, converge on the United Nations to demand that world leaders work to halt climate change and move beyond fossil fuels. 12:00 p.m.
