This Week: Fixing The Great Mistake

Lectures and film screenings are the highlights of the livable streets calendar this week, including a talk by Streetsblog publisher Mark Gorton at the New York chapter of the AIA. On Wednesday evening, Mark will make the case against automobile-dominated city planning, and explore what life in New York would be like if livable streets policies were adopted comprehensively.

  • Tuesday: What do the mayor’s sustainability office, the Sierra Club, Nissan and Con Ed all have in common? They’ll have representatives in Central Park to answer questions about electric vehicles at a free screening of the new documentary “Revenge of the Electric Car.” 7:30 p.m.
  • Wednesday: Streetsblog publisher Mark Gorton speaks at the New York chapter of the American Institute of Architects. His presentation, “Fixing the Great Mistake,” argues for reversing the massive allocation of space and resources to automobiles in cities. 6:00 p.m.
  • Also Wednesday: Three architecture firms present new communities they designed in China, the Czech Republic, and South Korea, as part of a discussion on international urbanism. 6:00 p.m.
  • More Wednesday: Manhattan Community Board 3’s transportation committee discusses a resolution stating support for speed enforcement cameras. 6:30 p.m.
  • Friday: The New York-Connecticut Sustainable Communities Consortium kicks off its work with its first public meeting, beginning the federally funded process of regional planning for smarter growth. 10:00 a.m.
