Why Saito Rides

Here’s the tenth portrait in Streetsblog’s weekly “Why I Ride” series.

Saito is an artist and animator living in Long Island City. Originally from Okayama, Japan, he’s been living and working in New York for 20 years. This rusty and somewhat squeaky bike, a gift from an old roommate, has been his ride for the past 10 years or so. “People always compliment me on the bike – I don’t really know why. My friends keep telling me to do something about the rust, but I’m busy so I never get around to it.”

Saito likes the bike because it’s small and light, and easy to take up and down stairs. He uses it for transport as much as possible. “It’s good for health, and I really enjoy the fresh air. I’m a little claustrophobic, so I don’t really like the subway, but I take it in the winter when there is snow on the ground.” There’s one other important reason why Saito prefers the bike – it was actually the first one he gave me when I asked: “It’s free!”

This was the scene in Jackson Heights yesterday, where Mayor Bloomberg, Anthony Weiner, and the top dog on Prospect Park West, Senator Chuck Schumer, joined a bevy of other pols to contest the surprisingly low Census counts in Brooklyn and Queens. (That’s Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez between Bloomberg and Schumer.) During the presser, the Senator was […]

I don’t care if this is a carefully choreographed photo op. For one day, at least, we’re not going to run a picture of the Weinermobile in a post about Anthony Weiner. We’re just going to link back to the most recent post with a Weinermobile picture. And we’re going to turn this into a […]

That’s not a typo. […]

Caption Contest: Chuck Schumer Rides the Prospect Park West Bike Lane

Looks like protected bike infrastructure is growing on Chuck Schumer. High-powered backchannel NIMBY assault notwithstanding, New York’s senior senator apparently does enjoy riding the bike lane in his front yard, as you can see in this Sunday morning photo courtesy of fellow PPW resident Paul Steely White. So, when will the rest of Streetsblog’s 2011 April Fools […]
