The success or failure of the city’s response to a winter storm is usually gauged by road conditions. If drivers are satisfied, the mayor gets credit for a job well done. Remarkably, there is no equivalent strategy for removing snow, ice, and slush from the pedestrian network.

On Tuesday Queens Community Board 4 will vote on the DOT plan to add a protected bike lane and other safety enhancements to 111th Street outside Flushing Meadows Corona Park.

DOT and the MTA are holding a series of public workshops to inform the plan to keep people moving during the L train shutdown. This is your chance to speak up for transit-priority streets, protected bikeways, and expanded pedestrian space.

On Thursday, DOT will reveal its plan for a protected bike lane on Fifth Avenue. Fifth gets more bike traffic than any other southbound avenue in Manhattan, according to DOT bike counts, and New Yorkers have been asking the city to make it a complete street for years. DOT committed to studying a redesign in 2014.

The looming L train shutdown will disrupt travel for hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers and demands a serious response. This week you can speak up for a robust plan to keep people moving sans L train at a workshop in Manhattan, where advocates are calling on DOT and the MTA to implement transitways on 14th Street and Delancey Street.

DOT is working on a citywide plan to improve streets for transit, including new bus lanes and better biking and walking access to stops and stations. This week DOT will host workshops in Queens and the Bronx to hear from New Yorkers about how their transit system could be better.
