This Week: Get Involved in the Next Round of Queens Blvd Safety Upgrades

After redesigning the service lanes on 2.5 miles of Queens Boulevard for safer walking and biking, this year DOT turns its attention to a third segment, between Eliot Avenue and Yellowstone Boulevard in Rego Park and Forest Hills.

On Thursday, you can weigh in on the next round of Queens Boulevard improvements at a DOT workshop. It’s important to keep advocating for safe bikeways where people can ride outside the door zone, because allocating that street space to biking will involve more parking removal than previous sections of the project.

  • Today: The Manhattan Community Board 6 transportation committee will discuss cashless tolling at the Queens-Midtown Tunnel, M14 Select Bus Service, local DOT projects, and the removal of two parking spots. NYU School of Dentistry, Nursing & Engineering, 433 First Avenue, Room 220, Manhattan, 7 p.m.
  • Tuesday: The Brooklyn CB 3 transportation committee will discuss requests from local residents for a Classon Avenue bike lane. Drivers have killed at least two people riding bikes on Classon since 2014. 1360 Fulton St., Ste. 202, Brooklyn, 6:30 p.m.
  • Also Tuesday: DOT will present plans for Cross Bay Boulevard Select Bus Service to Queens CB 14. Knights of Columbus, 333 Beach 90th Street, Queens, 7:15 p.m.
  • Wednesday: The Biking Public Project holds a member orientation session. CUNY Graduate Center, 365 5th Ave, 6th Floor Room 6304.01, Manhattan, 6:30 p.m.
  • Thursday: DOT hosts a workshop on safety improvements to Queens Boulevard between Eliot Avenue and Yellowstone Boulevard. P.S. 139 Rego Park, 93-06 63rd Drive, Queens, 6 p.m.
  • Friday: The Rudin Center holds a forum for a new study on intercity bus travel. The event will include a tour of the Port Authority Bus Terminal. Registration required. NYU Rudin Center for Transportation, 295 Lafayette Street, 2nd Floor, Manhattan, 12:30 p.m.

Queens Community Board 6 will take up the Rego Park phase of DOT's Queens Boulevard redesign; Manhattan CB 9 will get a look at a revised plan for bike lanes and road diet on Amsterdam Avenue north of 110th Street; and DOT goes to Sunset Park for the second workshop about the redesign of Fourth Avenue.
