This Week: Direct Action on the Grand Concourse and 111th St.

The first week of Bike Month is crammed with events, spilling over to the weekend, when two direct actions — one on the Grand Concourse, the other on 111th Street in Corona — will highlight the need for safer bike infrastructure.

  • Monday: The Brooklyn CB 7 transportation committee will hear from the DDC on the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway segment between 29th and 39th streets in Sunset Park, and NYC EDC will make a presentation on de Blasio’s BQX streetcar. 6:30 p.m.
  • More Monday: The Manhattan CB 6 transportation committee will discuss 23rd Street Select Bus Service and the Move New York toll reform plan. 7 p.m.
  • Tuesday: Get Bike Month off to a great start in Greenpoint, with a kick-off party where myths about the difficulty of biking in NYC will be busted, courtesy of Brooklyn Bicycle Company and TA. 6:30 p.m.
  • Wednesday: DOT will present three new pairs of potential east-west bike lanes for the Upper East Side to the Manhattan CB 8 transportation committee, in addition to the three pairs that neighborhood NIMBYs have already screamed about. 6:30 p.m.
  • Thursday: The MTA will host the first of two public meetings on upcoming Sandy-related repairs to the Canarsie tubes, which carry the L train beneath the East River. Thursday’s meeting is in Brooklyn. 6 p.m.
  • Friday: It’s the annual Regional Plan Association Assembly. This year the RPA will present preliminary recommendations from the Fourth Regional Plan, a 25-year outline for development in the NYC metro region. 9 a.m. Registration required.
  • Also Friday: Transportation Alternatives will hold a First Friday Action Ride, on the Grand Concourse, to bring attention to the need for a protected bike lane on that major Bronx corridor. 6:30 p.m.
  • Saturday: The day before Mother’s Day, 111 mothers in Corona will stop traffic for 111 seconds on 111th Street in Queens (at the entrance of Flushing Meadows Corona Park) in support of the protected bike lanes proposed for 111th Street and Queens Boulevard. 1 p.m.
