This Week: Jay Street Improvements, Vision Zero Funding

After years of advocacy by Transportation Alternatives and others, this week DOT will unveil plans to improve safety for people who walk and bike on Jay Street between Fulton and Sands. The proposal goes to the Brooklyn Community Board 2 transportation committee on Tuesday.

Also this week, TA staff and volunteers will lobby City Council members to fully fund redesign projects for NYC’s most dangerous streets.

  • Tuesday: DOT will present proposed Jay Street improvements to the Brooklyn CB 2 transportation committee. The plan includes parking-protected bike lanes between Fulton and Sands streets, new crosswalks and pedestrian islands, and a new signalized crossing for the public plaza at the Manhattan Bridge. 6 p.m.
  • Wednesday: DOT meets with the Manhattan CB 4 transportation committee to talk leading pedestrian intervals and safety improvements for 11th Avenue. 6:30 p.m.
  • Also Wednesday: Brooklyn CB 18 will hear from DOT on a proposal for bike lanes on Avenue V in Sheepshead Bay. 7 p.m.
  • Thursday: New Yorkers who want safer streets will join Transportation Alternatives in lobbying City Council members to fully fund Vision Zero street redesigns. Participants will meet at City Hall at 9:30 a.m. for a day of meetings with city lawmakers.
