This Week: Better Streets for Washington Heights Near I-95

The streets where I-95 cuts across Washington Heights see some of the worst traffic congestion in Upper Manhattan. At a DOT workshop tonight, you can weigh in about how to make the area better for walking, biking, and transit.

  • Monday: The Downtown Brooklyn Partnership and the Community Board 2 parks committee are hosting a workshop on The Brooklyn Strand, a plan to connect parks, plazas, and streets from Borough Hall to Brooklyn Bridge Park. 6 p.m.
  • Also Monday: DOT continues its second round of workshops about creating better biking and walking connections to the Harlem River bridges. This meeting will focus on areas north of the Macombs Dam Bridge. 6:30 p.m.
  • More Monday: DOT hosts a workshop to discuss street safety, bus access, traffic congestion, and sidewalk space near I-95 in Washington Heights (a.k.a. the Trans-Manhattan Expressway). 7 p.m.
  • Thursday: The Manhattan Community Board 7 transportation committee has a full agenda that will touch on traffic enforcement, signal adjustments to improve pedestrian safety, and recent design changes at the Lincoln Square bowtie. 7 p.m.
  • Friday: Eric Rivers, associate planner at engineering firm Arup, will deliver a talk at the Center for Architecture on pedestrian planning tools, from traditional methods to advanced micro-simulation modeling. 8 a.m.
