NYPD: 1,324 Pedestrians and Cyclists Injured, 14 Killed in September

Twenty-six people were killed in New York City traffic in September, and 4,674 were injured, according to the latest NYPD crash data report [PDF].

Citywide, 13 pedestrians and one cyclist were fatally struck by drivers: six pedestrians in Manhattan; one pedestrian in the Bronx; three pedestrians in Brooklyn; and three pedestrians in Queens, where the cyclist was killed. Among the victims were Daniel Rosado, Gitzella Katz, Pelagia Zingtapan, James Neverson, Rubin Baum, Francisco Camacho, Alexander Martinez, Arnold Slater, Ken Baker and Mary Gater.

Of 10 fatal crashes reported by Streetsblog and other outlets, no motorists were known to have been charged for causing a death. Historically, nearly half of motorists who kill a New York City pedestrian or cyclist do not receive so much as a citation for careless driving.

At least four seniors were killed by drivers in September: Gitzella Katz, 92; Pelagia Zingtapan, 65; Rubin Baum, 80; and Arnold Slater, 75.

Across the city, 893 pedestrians and 431 cyclists were hurt in collisions with motor vehicles. Per NYPD policy, few if any of these crashes were investigated by trained officers.

Ten motorists and two passengers died in the city in September; 1,605 and 1,745 were injured, respectively.
