This Week: Important Brooklyn Greenway Meeting at CB 1

How West Street would become a safer route for biking and walking with the construction of the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway.

After many years of advocacy, planning, and interim redesigns on streets like Kent Avenue, the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway reached an important milestone this summer when Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan announced the release of the official implementation plan for the full 14-mile route. This week the Department of Design and Construction will present the first capital project in that plan — a redesign of West Street between Eagle and Quay streets — to the transportation committee of Brooklyn Community Board 1.

The public is welcome to attend CB 1 committee meetings, and while the greenway has already undergone extensive review at this community board, it’s always a good idea to show your support for safer streets when specific designs come up for discussion.

Here are the rest of this week’s calendar highlights:

  • Monday: Our Boston-area readers won’t want to miss Charles Marohn of Strong Towns fame discuss the disastrous fiscal consequences of post-war suburbia and how American cities and towns can rebound from that legacy. Tonight’s talk is the first in “The New Urban Interface” series put together by Streetsblog founding editor Aaron Naparstek at MIT’s Department of Urban Studies and Planning. 6 p.m.
  • Tuesday: The New York Metropolitan Transportation Council holds a Bronx open house and webinar on the 2040 Regional Transportation Plan, the 25-year blueprint for multi-modal transportation strategies and investments in the NYMTC region. 4 to 8 p.m.
  • Tuesday: The transportation committee of Brooklyn Community Board 1 will get a look at plans for the West Street segment of the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway, the first capital project in the pipeline for the project. Also on the agenda: a plan to convert Union Avenue into a public plaza between Driggs and N. 12th Street. 6:30 p.m.
  • Wednesday: Jonathan Broder, general counsel for Conrail and Temple law professor, will discuss the development of the High Line “from the railroad’s point of view.” 6 p.m.
  • Wednesday: Ben Kabak of Second Avenue Sagas will talk transit and tolls with “Gridlock” Sam Schwartz in the latest installment of the New York Transit Museum’s Problem Solvers series. 6:30 p.m. RSVP requested.
