This Week: Street Safety, Transit Planning, Fourth Avenue

This week’s calendar is packed with events concerning street safety, including cross-town bike lanes for 29th and 30th Streets in Midtown, improvements on Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Boulevard in Harlem, and hazardous conditions in Grymes Hill. A Saturday workshop will address transportation challenges in Downtown Brooklyn and surrounding neighborhoods. There are two opportunities to help re-imagine Brooklyn’s Fourth Avenue, two discussions on the future of transit, and a bike-share workshop on the Upper East Side. The City Council meanwhile, will revisit parking grace periods and sanitation stickers following vetoes by Mayor Bloomberg.

  • Today: Manhattan Community Board 8 will hold a bike-share workshop for Lenox Hill and the Upper East Side. Sessions to begin at 6 and 7 p.m.
  • Today: The Park Slope Civic Council is planning a temporary pilot project on Brooklyn’s Fourth Avenue, between Bergen and Degraw, to serve as an example of how the street can better serve all users. Join the PSCC for a pilot project workshop this evening at 6 p.m.
  • Today: The transportation committee of Manhattan CB 5 will discuss, among other items, DOT’s proposed crosstown bike lanes for 29th and 30th Streets, while DOT will reveal plans for new mid-block pedestrian crossings from 51st Street to 57th Street between Sixth and Seventh Avenues. 6 p.m.
  • Tuesday: The City Council Transportation Committee will take up mayoral vetoes of the muni-meter grace period and the ban on sanitation stickers for cars that block street sweepers. Also on the agenda: the livery passenger bill of rights and DOT web site accessibility. 9:30 a.m.
  • Tuesday: DOT hosts an open house on new design concepts for Brooklyn’s Fourth Avenue between 15th and 65th Streets. 6:30 p.m.

  • Wednesday: The Regional Rail Working Group will discuss near-term strategies to advance the Penn Station Metro-Hub plan, including a “pilot” for all day service linking points in New Jersey with points in the Bronx, Westchester and Connecticut; and PATH/NYCT fare integration. 6 p.m.
  • Wednesday: WNYC’s Andrea Bernstein will lead a panel discussion on transit, sustainability and climate change. Featured panelists are David Bragdon, director of the mayor’s Office of Long-term Planning and Sustainability; Projjal K. Dutta, MTA sustainability initiatives director and an expert in environmental design and transportation; and Dr. Klaus H. Jacob, research scientist and professor at Columbia University. 6 p.m.
  • Wednesday: After the hit-and-run death of cyclist Ronald Tillman in Grymes Hill, advocates will be seeking public input on street conditions at the Howard Avenue Traffic Safety Community Forum. The meeting will take place at Wagner College, where Tillman was a student. 6:30 p.m.
  • Thursday: DOT continues its series of workshops on safety improvements for Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Boulevard. 6 p.m.
  • Saturday: The BK Gateway Transportation Workshop will address congestion, traffic and street safety in Prospect Heights, Crown Heights, Fort Greene, Clinton Hill, Downtown Brooklyn, Carroll Gardens, Red Hook, Northern Park Slope and Brooklyn Heights. 10 a.m.
