This Week: Election Day and Park(ing) Day

It’s not on the calendar, but tomorrow is special election and primary day in New York City, with seats in Albany, the City Council, and Congress up for grabs. Expect even lower turnout than usual — just a handful of votes will decide the outcome of the most contested races. Not sure who’s running for what? On the Streetsblog calendar, things are back in full swing now that the summer is winding down. A series of Manhattan community board meetings kick off the week, which ends with a bang as New Yorkers show how creative they can get with curbside space at Park(ing) Day 2011.

  • Tonight: DOT presents CB 12 with plans for the block of Riverside Drive north of 181st Street. This block, essentially an on-ramp for the Henry Hudson, is also the only nearby entrance to the Hudson River Greenway. 7:00 p.m.
  • Tuesday: CB 2’s transportation committee discusses the pedestrian safety improvements being implemented by the Hudson Square Connection and potential safety improvements for the intersection of Canal and Hudson Streets. 6:30 p.m.
  • Also Tuesday: A private company tells CB 7’s transportation committee about its plans to bring traffic calming and street beautification to a block of West 109th Street. The committee will also discuss a traffic study for the area bounded by Broadway and Central Park West between 96th and 100th Streets. 7:00 p.m.
  • Wednesday: CB 3’s transportation committee debates a proposal to reverse the direction of one block of Forsyth Street at the approach to the Manhattan Bridge’s bike path. 6:30 p.m.
  • Thursday: The MTA and DOT present the latest draft of their plans for faster bus service and safety improvements on Hylan Boulevard in a public meeting. 7:00 p.m.
  • Friday: It’s Park(ing) Day 2011! Around the city, parks, art installations, performances and public spaces will replace on-street parking spaces in what’s become an annual tradition. All day.
  • Also Friday: American Planning Association President Mitch Silver gives a lecture on “planning and the community.” 6:00 p.m.
