This Week: Better Transit in Flushing, Safer Streets in Harlem

Not to count chickens before they hatch, but if you’re thinking of going on Saturday’s Brooklyn Waterfront Epic Ride, the weather will probably cooperate and spare you the broiling heat of this past weekend. Right now, the forecast for Brooklyn predicts the mercury won’t rise above 90 degrees.

  • Tuesday: Come out to Flushing High School for a community forum on how to improve bus and subway service. Assembly members Grace Meng and Jim Brennan will be on hand for this forum, sponsored by Transportation Alternatives and Asian Americans for Equality. 7:00 p.m.
  • Wednesday: Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Boulevard in Harlem is a dangerous speedway where people have suffered serious and fatal injuries in separate crashes over the past few months. NYC DOT and Manhattan Community Board 10 are putting on a traffic calming workshop to listen to residents and talk about ways to make the street safer. 6:00 p.m.
  • Thursday: The Department of City Planning will lead a walking tour of the area near the Sheridan Expressway that could be redeveloped if the lightly-trafficked highway segment is torn down. DCP is currently leading a wide-ranging study of what could replace the Sheridan. Another walking tour will be held August 20. 6:00 p.m.
  • Saturday: The Third Annual Brooklyn Waterfront Epic Ride will highlight the potential of a completed Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway. The 40-mile ride will follow the greenway route and link up with the Jamaica Bay Greenway. Ride to the end and you can refuel with fare from the Rockaway Beach Food Vendors. Price is $20, or $10 if you’re a member of TA, the Brooklyn Greenway Initiative, or the Five Borough Bike Club. 9:00 a.m.
