This Week: East Side CBs Consider Safer Streets and Faster Buses

It’s an active week on the East Side of Manhattan, where three community boards will consider measures to improve street safety and speed up buses.

  • Monday: At a Community Board 6 transportation committee meeting, DOT will present plans to extend the First and Second Avenue bike routes from 34th Street up to 57th Street. The project calls for a protected path on First Avenue up to 49th Street, with the rest of the extension comprised of a new shared lane treatment — i.e. stencils on a traffic lane. Last year the same CB endorsed a version of the same plan that included buffered bike lanes instead of shared lanes. The meeting gets underway tonight at 7:00.
  • Tuesday: The traffic and public safety committee of Manhattan CB 11, which includes the sections of First and Second Avenue seemingly passed over for protected bikeways this year, will discuss whether to endorse legislation authorizing the use of speeding enforcement cameras in New York City. Lindsey Ganson of Transportation Alternatives will present. 5:30 p.m.
  • T.A. will also be presenting Tuesday night to the transportation committee of Brooklyn CB 10, the southern Brooklyn district that recently voted against the addition of a bike lane on Bay Ridge Parkway. 7:00 p.m.
  • Wednesday: DOT will present results of their study on giving priority to buses on the Queensboro Bridge at a meeting of Manhattan CB 8. Each day, 16,000 New Yorkers ride buses across the Q’Boro, where rush hour traffic slows bus speeds to a crawl. 6:30 p.m.
