This Week: Bikes in Parks, Contractor Conference

The community board action this week is all on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, where CB 7 will first discuss bikes in parks — including possible bike lanes across Central Park — and then safety improvements at 71st Street. There’s also a full plate of panels and conferences, including an Albany meeting of the New York State Transportation Equity Alliance and a high-octane conference for the region’s transportation industry.

  • Monday: The parks committee of Manhattan CB 7 talks bikes. First, the president of the Central Park Conservancy discusses possible east-west bike routes through the park. Then, the committee discusses bike/pedestrian conflicts in Riverside Park. 7:00 p.m.
  • Tuesday: The New York State Transportation Equity Alliance holds a forum in Albany to bring together a statewide coalition in support of fixing our infrastructure and funding our transit. 7:00 p.m.
  • Wednesday: Manhattan CB 7’s transportation committee hears a presentation from DOT about safety improvements at the intersection of 71st Street, Amsterdam Ave and Broadway. 7:00 p.m.
  • Thursday: The newly-founded Taxi Research Network holds a panel discussion at City College, moderated by former TLC Commissioner Matthew Daus: “Developing a Mainstream Transport Role for the Taxi Cab.” 2:30 p.m.
  • Also Thursday: The New York Academy of Sciences hosts a panel on climate change adaptation. 6:00 p.m.
  • Friday: The construction industry hosts the region’s top transportation officials, including Stanley Gee, Richard Ravitch, Jay Walder and Christopher Ward, for a full-day conference on “emerging business opportunities.” 7:30 a.m.

Earlier this month Manhattan Community Board 7, on the Upper West Side, passed a resolution calling on DOT to install a protected bike lane in Columbus Circle, filling a critical void in the bike network.
