What’s Good for the Naked Cowboy Is Good for NYC

dnpoll.jpgFor today’s analysis of the city’s plan to pedestrianize Broadway at Times Square, the Daily News enlisted such experts as "an upper West Side attorney who thinks the diversion will be ‘too overwhelming’" and "a Long Island resident who often drives to the area [and] considers the change ‘a nightmare’ that will ‘make traffic worse.’" Fortunately, they also called on the Naked Cowboy:

"The cars aren’t adding anything, they’re just driving by," he said, adding he’d "be able to serve twice as many people."

The News is running an online poll on the changes planned for Broadway (which, of course, aren’t limited to Times Square). As of this writing the pro-pedestrians are ahead. Don’t miss your chance to weigh in.

The Crossroads of the World Goes Car-Free

|
I’ve lived in New York City for just about twenty years now but yesterday was my first trip to Times Square. Sure, I’ve been to Times Square before. Plenty of times. But until yesterday Times Square had never ever been a destination for me. Rather, it had always been a place to avoid or, if […]

Better Rules for Plazas — It’s Not All About Times Square

|
The City Council heard testimony today on Intro. 1109-A, which would give DOT authority over designating and regulating pedestrian plazas across the city. DOT has carved out nearly 70 plazas since 2008, but its jurisdiction over those plazas remains ambiguous. This matters for a few reasons. The reason that gets all the attention is the made-for-tabloids storyline […]

The NYC Street Design Manual: Guidelines for a Livable City

|
At about the same time that Times Square went car-free, DOT released its Street Design Manual, a mammoth document that "provides policies and design guidelines… for the improvement of streets and sidewalks throughout the five boroughs." It’s not as sexy as the Naked Cowboy in a pedestrian plaza, but I would be hard-pressed to overstate […]

Times Square Coalition: Keep the Plazas, Regulate Naked People

|
The Times Square Alliance and a coalition of electeds has a plan to address complaints about Times Square without destroying the hugely successful pedestrian plazas. The centerpiece of the proposal is to legally redefine the Broadway plazas as a public space with three regulated zones: “civic” zones for public seating areas and programmed events; “flow” zones for pedestrian throughput; […]

Will Curb Extensions and Signs Do the Job at Broadway and Dyckman?

|
It won’t be long before pedestrians will have shorter crossing distances at Broadway, Dyckman Street, and Riverside Drive in Inwood. Last we checked, work was just getting underway on curb extensions, following the installation of signs prohibiting left turns for motorists approaching the intersection from all directions. As of this afternoon, the southeast curb extension […]
