Conference theme
Changing Public Life in a Changing Society is the focus for the upcoming conference/study tour in Copenhagen 28-30 September 2006. Past decades have shown impressive improvements in the treatment of Public Spaces, and equally dramatic changes concerning the range and character of Public Life.

A century ago the streets and squares were teeming with activities, nearly all of which were obligatory aspects of people’s daily lives. Now a situation has been reached where recreational and creative activities play a central role in the life of our cities. This dramatic shift in character and scope of public life places new demands on public realm strategies and the design of the public spaces.

Conference and study tour

The PUBLIC SPACES / PUBLIC LIFE: Copenhagen 2006 event will be a combined conference and study tour.

Day one will be an international conference where the new challenges to public realm strategies and city quality will be exemplified by experiences, projects and research from four continents.

Days two and three will be devoted to presenting how public space policies have been steadily developed in Copenhagen since the first pedestrian street was inaugurated four decades ago. On each of the two days recent projects will be presented, followed by guided study tours on foot, bicycle, boat and bus to all parts of the city, providing an overview of changes in the city- and streetscape and what is currently underway in 2006.
