This Week: Celebrate Citi Bike, Minus the Bikes

New York’s bike-share system might be delayed until spring, but that won’t stop the celebration. It also won’t stop advocacy efforts  to improve safety on Midtown’s major avenues from moving forward. Also on the calendar: opportunities to provide feedback to DOT on a Brooklyn plaza and connect with rail advocates from across the region. Details below…

  • Tuesday: Last week, we covered the campaign kickoff for safety enhancements on Fifth and Sixth Avenues in Manhattan. Now, you can join the effort. Volunteers have already broken into three groups: grassroots organizing, coalition building and media outreach. The coalition building group will be hosting its brainstorming meeting at the office of Transportation Alternatives on Tuesday. RSVP required. 6:30 p.m.
  • Wednesday: A pedestrian plaza at New Lots Triangle in East New York was greeted warmly when it opened in November 2011. Now, DOT is back to gather community feedback on the space. 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
  • Wednesday: The monthly meeting of the Regional Rail Working Group will kick off with a presentation by David Schonbrunn, President of Transportation Solutions Defense and Education Fund (TRANSDEF), on the issues facing rail advocates in the Bay Area and statewide in California. Then learn about federal plans for the Northeast Corridor and how rail advocates will respond to make sure the region’s priorities are taken into account. 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Hoboken City Hall.
  • Thursday: The system might be delayed, but the party goes on. Join Transportation Alternatives for a fundraiser to celebrate the coming of Citi Bike at Roulette on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn. The event will feature food, live music by Dujeous, Brooklyn Brewery beer and a silent auction. Also be on the lookout for bike ballet, a choreographed dance on bikes. You still have time to buy your ticket online. 7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.
