Streetsblog NYC Seeks Volunteer With Strong Stomach
Regular Streetsblog readers may have noticed a gap in our usual Friday coverage. For the last few weeks we have not been publishing the Weekly Carnage column compiling the city’s traffic violence. After nearly a year-and-a-half, our superb volunteer Summer Greenstein could no longer devote the necessary time to the project. While she was on the job, Summer spent many hours poring over some of the most depressing news coverage you can imagine, and put together an impressive stretch of continuous columns.
This work makes a difference, especially when the column is posted as consistently as Summer produced it. The Weekly Carnage provides a rolling summary of the toll of car crashes in NYC — information that does not get synthesized elsewhere. We often hear from advocates who rely on it as a resource and readers who appreciate how it conveys the scale of traffic violence.
So, if you have the dedication and the stomach to produce the column, we’re looking for someone to pick up where Summer left off. It’s a grim task, but also an important contribution to the local livable streets movement. Interested volunteers should email me at ben@streetsblog.org.
Many thanks to Summer for giving her time and effort to the task.
