Earlier this year, DOT presented a conceptual design to reconstruct Brooklyn’s Fourth Avenue including protected bike lanes. This week the agency begins showing the project to community boards, with a presentation tonight at Brooklyn CB 7.

The reconstruction of Fourth Avenue between 65th Street and Atlantic Avenue is an important opportunity to add safe bike infrastructure to a major street that sorely needs it. DOT safety projects in 2012 and 2013 successfully calmed traffic on Fourth Avenue and reduced traffic injuries, especially for pedestrians, but didn’t include bikeways.

A permanent reconstruction can either create an extremely useful low-stress bike connection between the neighborhoods of western Brooklyn, or it could make such a connection nearly impossible for another generation.

After months of public meetings and outreach, DOT brings its Fourth Avenue plan to the Brooklyn Community Board 7 transportation committee tonight.
