This Week: Speak Up for Safe Streets in Fort Greene

The sun is out and the snow is melting (or accumulating in large piles where it will remain until April). The Streetsblog calendar is here to help you get over any lingering cabin fever.

The headline event is tomorrow’s street safety town hall in Fort Greene. Council Member Laurie A. Cumbo is holding the forum in response to the death of Victoria Nicodemus, who was killed by a driver who swerved onto the sidewalk last month. Residents will be able to address Cumbo, DOT Commissioner Polly Trottenberg, NYPD officials, and other local electeds about street safety in the neighborhood.

Check the calendar for the full slate of events. Here are the highlights:

  • Tuesday: Council Member Laurie Cumbo, DOT Commissioner Polly Trottenberg, and representatives from NYPD are holding a town hall on street safety in and around Fort Greene. 6:30 p.m.
  • Also Tuesday: DOT will show plans for safety improvements, including bicycle connections, on St. John’s Place and Sterling Place in Prospect Heights and Crown Heights to the Brooklyn Community Board 8 transportation committee. 7 p.m.
  • More Tuesday: Also in Crown Heights, the full board of Brooklyn CB 9 is expected to vote on the Empire Boulevard pedestrian safety improvements. 7 p.m. This meeting has been postponed.
  • Wednesday: DOT wants to turn Times Plaza — at the intersection of Flatbush Avenue, Atlantic Avenue, and Fourth Avenue by the Barclays Center — into a safer, more enjoyable public space. You can weigh in on how you’d like to see it change at a public workshop at the Brooklyn YWCA. 6:30 p.m.
  • Thursday: The Brooklyn CB 1 transportation committee will consider DOT’s proposed safety improvements for the intersection of Meeker Avenue and Skillman Avenue. 6:30 p.m.

Keep your eyes on our calendar for updates. As always, if you have an event we should know about, give us a holler.
