This Week: Big Votes on Bike Lanes for Amsterdam and Sixth Ave

Community boards are expected to vote on two major Manhattan street safety projects this week: protected bike lanes for Sixth Avenue and Amsterdam Avenue.

There’s a lot more community board action in Brooklyn — so much that we couldn’t cram it all into this post. See the complete Streetsblog calendar for more events.

  • Tuesday: DOT will present a plan for Bushwick bike lanes to the Brooklyn CB 4 transportation committee. Space is expected to be limited and the board is asking people to call in to reserve a spot. 6 p.m.
  • Also Tuesday: The Manhattan CB 7 transportation committee will vote on the proposal for an Amsterdam Avenue protected bike lane. 6 p.m.
  • More Tuesday: With support from Assembly Member Joe Lentol, Meeker Avenue in Williamsburg could be made safer for people walking and biking near the BQE. See and comment on the DOT plan when it comes before Brooklyn CB 1. 6 p.m.
  • Thursday: Manhattan CB 5 will vote on safety improvements to Sixth Avenue, including a protected bike lane and more pedestrian space from 14th Street to 33rd Street. 6 p.m.
  • Also Thursday: It’s a safe streets fundraiser! It’s a fancy dance party! It’s the Transportation Alternatives Bicyclist Ball and Pedestrian Prom! Tickets available in advance only. Get yours today. 7 to 10 p.m.
  • Friday: The City Council transportation committee will hold an oversight hearing on parking. On the agenda are bills that would require city-issued placards to have barcodes for confirming validity and require DOT to create an app to allow drivers to pay for parking and trade unused Muni Meter time. 10 a.m.

This Week: Amsterdam Avenue, Fourth Avenue, Queens Boulevard

Three big street redesign projects are on the calendar. Queens Community Board 6 will take up the Rego Park phase of DOT's Queens Boulevard redesign; Manhattan CB 9 will get a look at a revised plan for bike lanes and road diet on Amsterdam Avenue north of 110th Street; and DOT goes to Sunset Park for the second workshop about the redesign of Fourth Avenue.
