This Week: Plazas, Livability, and Traffic Justice

The action this week is tonight and Thursday, with opportunities to get involved in public space planning, dig into what “livability” means, and talk about specific traffic justice cases with Manhattan D.A. Cy Vance.

Tonight: DOT sits down for a charette with the Washington Heights community to create a plan for the new 10,000 square foot pedestrian plaza slated for La Plaza De Las Americas, at 175th Street and Broadway. 6:00 p.m.
Thursday: NYU’s Rudin Center hosts a half-day conference on the topic of livability. The first panel, which includes PlaNYC chief David Bragdon, will discuss how climate change and livability intersect and the second will focus on how to measure the federal government’s six livability goals and how to make trade-offs between them. 8:30 a.m.
Also Thursday: Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance Jr. is holding a town hall in East Harlem and Transportation Alternatives will be there to ask him why he didn’t bring charges in the recent traffic killings of Marcus Ewing and Max Mendez. Join them at 6:30 p.m.

‘Sammy’s Law’ Hunger Strike Begins at State Capitol

Two mothers whose children were killed by reckless drivers have begun a hunger strike that they'll continue until Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie (D-Bronx) brings to the floor a long-stalled bill that would allow New York City to set its own speed limits.
