This Week: City Council Bike Hearing, Updating PlaNYC

The biggest event of the week is Thursday’s City Council hearing on bike policy, which is expected to focus especially on the implementation and effects of bike lanes. A big turnout from both bicycling supporters and opponents is expected for this high-visibility public forum. Also this week: another round of “community conversations” to gather public input on next year’s update of PlaNYC, and a possible resolution on the 34th Street Transitway from the East Side’s Community Board 6, which is largely opposed to the project.

  • Tonight: Manhattan Community Board 6’s Transportation Committee discusses both the proposed 34th Street Transitway and First and Second Avenue Select Bus Service. Expect strong and organized opposition to at least the 34th Street project. 7:00 p.m.
  • Also tonight: The Office of Long-Term Planning and Sustainability comes to Upper Manhattan to hear what those communities want from next year’s update of PlaNYC. Let them know what you’d like to see added. 7:00 p.m.
  • Thursday: The City Council Transportation Committee holds a hearing on the “opportunities and challenges” of bicycling in New York City. It starts at 10:00 a.m., but you’ll want to show up early if you plan to testify.
  • Also Thursday: The PlaNYC outreach team travels to Eastern Queens for another community conversation on next year’s update. 7:00 p.m.

City Scraps Pedestrian Plaza Option for 34th Street Transitway

Pedestrians who navigate Midtown’s crowded sidewalks won’t get as much as they could have from the proposed 34th Street Transitway.
