This Week in Livable Streets Events

It’s relatively quiet this week on the Streetsblog Calendar, but still plenty to keep livable streets advocates busy. Here’s some of what’s on tap.

  • Today: Bike From Work Day. Enjoy an after work snack and celebrate biking from work with the
Transportation Alternatives Brooklyn Committee on the Manhattan Bridge.
Learn about TA projects and how you can get involved. 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.
  • Wednesday: Manhattan District Attorney Candidate Debate. It’s the biggest event of the week, as Transportation Alternatives and the Criminal Justice Society of the
Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law host a round table
debate featuring three currently announced candidates for Manhattan
    District Attorney
. The candidates will discuss their views on vehicular
crimes and the role of the district attorney’s office in protecting New Yorkers from reckless drivers. Streetsblog EIC Aaron Naparstek will deliver opening remarks. 8:30 a.m.
  • Thursday: Two fun events today — a bike film fest for those able to take a day trip up to Danbury, CT via Metro-North (1:00 p.m.); and the Bicycle for a Day Fundraiser with actor Matthew Modine and TA’s Paul Steely White at Solar One. Proceeds of this $30-per-ticket fundraiser will be for bike racks at Solar One’s new building, Solar Two. 6:30 – 10 p.m.
  • Saturday: Williamsburg Walks. It’s Summer Streets season, and Williamsburg’s Bedford Avenue, from North 4th Street to North 9th
Street, will be open to pedestrians only on six Saturdays
from noon to sunset. Initiated by community members and organized this year by Neighbors Allied for Good Growth and The L Magazine,
Williamsburg Walks is a temporary street closure intended to promote the enjoyment of
Northside Brooklyn, both on Bedford Avenue and beyond. Walks invites
the community to come together, shop, stroll, socialize and enjoy
activities planned by local non-profits and businesses in an area
    unobstructed by traffic. 12 p.m.
  • Sunday: Tour de Brooklyn. The 5th annual Tour de Brooklyn is an exciting FREE fun family bike
tour. The tour will start and end in the Coney Island area with a brief
rest stop in Prospect Park. NYPD will escort the tour as a rolling
parade. Riders of all ages and abilities are welcome to participate. The ride is officially full, but if you missed your chance to register, 500
spots will be open for day-of registration — first come, first served starting at 8 a.m. The tour starts at 9:00.
