Through the first five months of 2017, City Hall reported 46 pedestrians and cyclists killed by NYC motorists, and 5,577 injured, compared to 56 deaths and 5,928 injuries in the first five months of 2016.

There’s a Better Way to Assess the Effect of Traffic Enforcement Than Counting Tickets

NYPD has increased tickets for speeding and texting while driving 50 percent so far in 2017 compared to the same period last year, Commissioner James O’Neill testified at a City Council budget hearing last week. Speeding and distracted driving are two of the most common factors in fatal and injurious crashes in NYC, so it stands to reason that this shift in enforcement is reducing the incidence of dangerous driving. But there's no way to actually tell if those summonses are changing driver behavior.

NYC Drivers Injured 1,023 Pedestrians and Cyclists in April, and Killed Eight

Eighteen people died in New York City traffic in April, and 4,424 were injured, according to City Hall’s Vision Zero View crash data map. Through the first four months of 2017, City Hall reported 38 pedestrians and cyclists killed by city motorists and 4,314 injured, compared to 44 deaths and 4,685 injuries in the first four months of 2016.

Nineteen pedestrians and cyclists were killed by city motorists through February, and 2,186 injured, compared to 26 deaths and 2,296 injuries in the first two months of 2016.
