City officials want to curb rampant speeding and traffic violence on one of Staten Island's most dangerous roads with cutting-edge urban planning technology: adding more parking and painting an unprotected bike lane.
"Street design and land use are at the root cause of a lot of the traffic safety challenges we see across the country,” said Mike Lydon, founding principal of Street Plans. “And to fail to acknowledge that is a problem.”
The disproportionate number of crashes caused by unlicensed drivers defeat the business-friendly and safety purpose of complete streets, road diets, curb extensions, and other traffic-calming elements to encourage bike- and pedestrian-safe main streets.
If you think for a second that cars and bikes approach our roadways the same, or wonder why cyclists behave differently at intersections, let me go over an approach to a single intersection on bike in detail.
