Addressing Racism and Police Brutality in Traffic Enforcement

Police brutality and racial inequities in criminal justice must be addressed by advocates and agencies aiming to reduce traffic fatalities. That's the key takeaway from a Vision Zero Cities panel yesterday on police violence and traffic enforcement. "Vision Zero cannot be a reason to overly-police black and brown bodies," said Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition Executive Director Tamika Butler. "You can’t ignore the country we live in."

Driver Pleads to Manslaughter for Killing Washington Heights Pedestrian

At around 4:15 a.m. on January 30, Jonatan Segura was driving a BMW sedan on 181st Street near Amsterdam Avenue when he hit a pickup truck and struck Jorge Encarnacion and an unidentified 46-year-old woman.

A motorist killed a senior at the same intersection in 2016. The 19th Precinct, meanwhile, has made a show of seizing electric bikes delivery workers need to earn a living.

Hit-and-Run Driver Who Killed Greenway Cyclist Gets 1 to 4 Years

The hit-and-run driver who killed cyclist Olga Cook on the Hudson River Greenway is going to jail. On the evening of June 11, 2016, Samuel Silva hit Cook with a Ford pickup truck as he turned right from West Street onto Chambers Street. Cook, 30, was knocked to the ground and sustained fatal head and body trauma.

Cab Driver Who Challenged ROW Law Pleads Guilty in Pedestrian Death

Livery driver Buddhi Gurung, who killed 77-year-old Carol Dauplaise on the East Side, pled guilty after a judge ruled against him. It was the second time Manhattan DA Cy Vance successfully fended off a constitutional challenge to the city's Right of Way Law.
