NYC motorists killed four people riding bikes over a 15-day period in June and July. In every case, NYPD said the victim ran a red while citing no corroborative evidence.
Barbara Horn was the second person this year killed by a cab driver in a crosswalk in the 19th Precinct. On an average day, precinct officers summons around five motorists for violating a pedestrian’s right of way, and ticket just one speeding driver.
A motorist killed a senior at the same intersection in 2016. The 19th Precinct, meanwhile, has made a show of seizing electric bikes delivery workers need to earn a living.
A for-hire driver in an Uber cab injured a young man riding a bike on the Hudson River Greenway last week. The driver blamed the victim, and indications are NYPD did not conduct a full-scale investigation. The Taxi and Limousine Commission declined comment.
Companies like Uber and Lyft will have to disclose data on pick-up and drop-off locations to the city. With a clearer picture about where trips start and end, officials can make better decisions about managing traffic and providing transit service.
