By Stephen Miller | Jul 23, 2013 | 8 Comments
In a City Council district in the heart of the Bronx, where the overwhelming majority of households are car-free, an aide to Council Member James Vacca distinguished himself last night by vocally supporting congestion pricing, on-street parking reform, and protected bike lanes. The District 15 seat, representing Bathgate, Belmont, Crotona, Fordham, East Tremont, Van Nest, […]

Last night at approximately 7:15 p.m., an unidentified 18 year-old woman was killed by a truck driver while crossing the street at Rockaway Boulevard and 132nd Avenue in Rochdale, Queens. The driver of the 1999 International truck stayed on the scene and was not ticketed or charged with a crime, though NYPD’s Collision Investigation Squad […]

Council Candidates at Fort Greene Forum Agree: Don’t Touch Parking

By Stephen Miller | Jul 19, 2013 | 33 Comments
If you were hoping for inspiring leadership from the City Council on transportation issues after the next election, you may want to look somewhere other than District 35, which covers the neighborhoods just east of downtown Brooklyn. Two-thirds of households in the district are car-free, according to the 2000 Census. But while most candidates supported traffic calming […]

Queens Residents, Elected Officials Ask DOT for Traffic Calming in Dutch Kills

By Stephen Miller | Jul 18, 2013 | 3 Comments
The Dutch Kills neighborhood sits on the northern edge of Long Island City, hemmed in by Northern Boulevard and Queens Plaza, with the East River to the west and Astoria to the north. Dangerous traffic is an everyday presence — and not just on the main arteries nearby. After a number of car-on-car crashes, neighborhood […]

Who Killed 125th Street SBS: A Timeline

By Stephen Miller | Jul 17, 2013 | 15 Comments
Throughout the development of the 125th Street Select Bus Service project, local elected officials and community boards never came out in support of actual bus improvements. Instead, they cloaked their opposition in concerns about “process.” Following yesterday’s announcement from the MTA and NYC DOT that they will no longer pursue Select Bus Service on 125th Street, now is […]

Eyes on the Street: Adam Clayton Powell Now Safer, With or Without CB 10

By Stephen Miller | Jul 16, 2013 | 12 Comments
Harlem’s Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard, connecting Macombs Dam Bridge to Central Park, has long been a dangerous speedway. DOT clocked drivers traveling as fast as 52 mph on the six-lane divided road, with up to two-thirds of evening drivers going above the 30 mph speed limit. Between 2006 and 2012, twelve pedestrians were killed on the […]

Reactions have been rolling in since DOT and the MTA announced this morning that they are canceling plans for Select Bus Service on 125th Street. First Downsized, Now Cancelled: DOT and MTA Drop 125th Street SBS Plan

By Stephen Miller | Jul 16, 2013 | 26 Comments
Facing opposition led by State Senator Bill Perkins, NYC DOT and the MTA have cancelled the plan to bring Select Bus Service to 125th Street in Harlem. The plan, which was trimmed in half in May, cutting bus lanes out of West Harlem, has now been shelved. As a result, tens of thousands of daily […]

DC’s Scaled-Back Parking Reforms Still Way More Ambitious Than NYC’s

By Stephen Miller | Jul 15, 2013 | 9 Comments
For five years, Washington, DC, has been preparing a comprehensive rewrite of its zoning code — including the elimination of parking minimums in areas well-served by bus or rail. Under pressure from opponents afraid it would make it harder for them to find on-street parking, DC planning chief Harriet Tregoning announced on Friday that the city […]

DOT Passes on Protected Bike Lanes for Tribeca, Gets CB Committee Support

By Stephen Miller | Jul 12, 2013 | 19 Comments
With the exception of the Hudson River Greenway, routes between Tribeca and Greenwich Village can hardly be described as bike-friendly. Cyclists must compete with gridlock near Canal Street and the Holland Tunnel, while wide north-south arteries like Varick Street and Sixth Avenue are daunting roads. DOT is proposing a mix of upgrades between Warren Street […]

The first responses are set to go up on TA’s website at the end of this month. TA Deputy Director Noah Budnick told Streetsblog that the organization has already heard […]

Brooklyn CB 6 Reverses Course, Supports Fourth Avenue Traffic Calming

By Stephen Miller | Jul 11, 2013 | 32 Comments
One month after Brooklyn Community Board 6 passed a resolution condemning DOT’s safety proposal for Fourth Avenue, upending months of public workshops and the decision of its own transportation committee, the full board voted 21-3, with two abstentions, to support a modified version of the plan at a special meeting last night. Beginning in February, DOT held public workshops to […]
