By Noah Kazis | Feb 17, 2012 | 8 Comments
Here’s a project we’re glad not to be doing (but we’re thrilled someone is). Gallery owner Robert Hult is spending today walking the route of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, not on the highway but as close alongside it as possible, and posting regular photos to his Twitter account. Taken collectively, the snapshots create a real vision […]

Cuomo Willing to Wait for Tappan Zee Loan, But Not for Tappan Zee Transit

By Noah Kazis | Feb 16, 2012 | No Comments
Using a federal loan to finance $2 billion of the cost of the Tappan Zee Bridge could delay construction work significantly, warns trade journal Project Finance today. Trading time for a low interest rate might save money, but it puts the lie to the Cuomo administration’s claim that adding transit would unacceptably slow the Tappan […]

This morning’s City Council hearing on traffic crash investigations is already having an impact. The City Council is holding a first-of-its-kind hearing on NYPD crash investigations today, a joint effort of the transportation and public safety committees. With Hayley and Diego’s Law Unenforced, Sponsors Aim to Strengthen Law

By Noah Kazis | Feb 14, 2012 | 2 Comments
In 2010, State Senator Dan Squadron and Assembly Member Brian Kavanagh stood on the corner of Essex and Delancey Streets to tell motorists: “Careless driving is unacceptable.” Said Kavanagh, “You can suffer serious consequences.” A year later, however, the new enforcement tool the two legislators were touting, Hayley and Diego’s Law, had gone almost entirely […]

The hits keep coming against the Republican House of Representatives’ radical transportation bill, especially its unprecedented attack on dedicated transit funding. In New York, the region’s Congress member — of both parties — and editorial boards have now been joined by that most traditional GOP constituency: big business. In a letter sent to the House […]
