A Flat “Congestion Charge” for Taxis and Uber: Yea or Nay?

By David Meyer | Dec 4, 2015 | 14 Comments
Would a new surcharge on taxi and for-hire vehicle trips in Manhattan below 59th Street thin out traffic on congested streets? Not much it won’t, according to transportation economist Charles Komanoff, whose traffic analysis has helped shape the Move NY toll reform campaign. Every year the city’s Independent Budget Office releases a list of options to cut expenses and […]

How Can DSNY Fix Its Process for Removing Abandoned Bikes?

By David Meyer | Dec 3, 2015 | 22 Comments
The city’s process for removing abandoned bikes from public property is broken, advocates say, but a bill proposed by Council Member Brad Lander to deal with the problem needs some adjustments in order to be effective. Abandoned bikes on the sidewalk are an eyesore and make it harder for people using their bikes to find an open spot […]

There have been 38,000 hit-and-run crashes in NYC so far this year, 4,000 of which injured people, the NYPD revealed at today’s City Council transportation committee meeting. Of 48 recorded “catastrophic” hit-and-run incidents, resulting death or serious injury, only 28 have led to prosecutions of any sort. Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer has introduced bills […]

Wow! — Joanna Oltman Smith (@jooltman) December 2, 2015 A proposed “bike safety task force” met with resistance from city officials and safe streets advocates at a City Council transportation committee meeting this morning. The Q44 SBS features the standard package of improvements that DOT and the MTA have employed to cut travel […]

When Will DDC Build the Brooklyn Greenway on Flushing Ave and West Street?

By David Meyer | Dec 1, 2015 | 10 Comments
It’s been more than three years since NYC DOT announced its full implementation plan for the 14-mile Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway, a series of 23 capital projects that would build out the biking and walking path in high-quality, permanent materials. At the time, DOT said that construction would begin soon on the Flushing Avenue and West Street segments of the […]

By David Meyer | Nov 24, 2015 | 23 Comments
Like their counterparts at Community Board 4, members of the Manhattan Community Board 5 transportation committee think DOT’s proposed redesign of Sixth Avenue isn’t bold enough. Unlike CB 4, the committee voted for the plan anyway in a unanimous decision last night. The proposal would add a protected bike lane from 14th Street to 33rd Street, narrowing […]

By David Meyer | Nov 13, 2015 | 20 Comments
At yesterday’s City Council transportation committee hearing, chair Ydanis Rodriguez hoped to engage the MTA and DOT concerning areas of the city that need more transit options. But despite being invited, according to Rodriguez, the MTA refused to send anyone. Instead, DOT Commissioner Polly Trottenberg promised to pressure the MTA to invest in transportation projects to improve commuter times between Manhattan and the edges […]
